Cotton T-shirt with print (Magical deer)
Magic deer by Santos Daniel Carrillo
Meaning of the stamping: The Magic Deer represents both the power of Corn to sustain the body and the power of peyote to nourish and enlighten the spirit (the green circles on the body are cobs and the eye is a peyote). Animals such as the eagle, snake and deer are of great importance to Mexican indigenous cultures. However, one of these animals has a special meaning for each group and therefore transmits some of its qualities to the tribe.
The deer takes on this more intimate role for the Huichol. The character of the Huichol people is light, flexible and humorous. They have avoided open warfare, neither fought against the Spanish nor for the Mexican government, but have always kept their traditions: The Huichol hunt and sacrifice deer in their ceremonies; they make offerings to the deer, corn to guard their crops and to the peyote deer for artistic inspiration and spiritual direction.
