Wolf by Guadalupe de la Cruz Carrillo
Meaning of the stamping: The wolf is revered by the Huichol for its wisdom. Rarely seen in the Huichol highlands, wolves are kept in the most secluded parts of the forest, away from roads and communities. Many Huichol believe that their ancestors were wolves and many Huichol shamans seek the guidance of wolves in their quest for knowledge. It is said that there are shamans who transform into wolves. This carved and chaquira covered piece represents the magical aspects of the wolf.
The peyote on the snout and head, the luminous deer in front, the corn bush on the crest of the ear and the guardian scorpions together with the butterflies, flowers and crabs, demonstrate the harmony between the strength and intelligence of this animal as a spiritual guide.
