Origin and meaning: Wooden alebrijes were created by Mexican artist Pedro Linares in the mid-20th century. He was inspired by his dreams and visions during an illness, where he imagined fantastical creatures combining real animal parts and surreal elements. Later in Oaxaca he perfected himself with copal wood, making pieces of enormous artistic quality. Alebrijes have become symbols of Mexican culture and crafts, and are often considered spiritual guardians or representations of creativity.
Carving and painting technique: Wooden alebrijes are carved by hand using traditional tools such as chisels, knives, and gouges. Craftsmen shape wood into the desired design, creating detailed shapes and textures. Multiple coats of water-based or acrylic paint are then applied to achieve the vibrant colors characteristic of the alebrijes.
