Huichol art, its meaning\u2026<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A ritual art.- Huichol art has its origins in ritual art<\/strong>, which is characterized by being a specific religious practice of an ethnic group, in which the identity of the community is defined as well as its cosmogony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ancestral art arises from tradition, as a representation of the images visualized by the marakame, also known as shamans.<\/strong>, these visions arise from the consumption of hikuri or peyote, which allows them to travel through the threshold of an unknown universe and thus be able to establish a direct relationship with the divine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huichol art has a hypnotic beauty that is not only made up of myths drawn on yarn or thread, but also each artistic creation has a great cosmogonic dimension that reveals part of its spiritual richness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does the word Huichol mean?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The name Huichol is derived from the Wix\u00e1rika word, which means \"soothsayer or shaman\".<\/strong> or \"deep-hearted person who loves knowledge\", the Huichol language belongs to the Uto-Aztecan language family. It is important to note that the \"Huicholes\" prefer to be called Wirr\u00e1rika or Wix\u00e1rika and in plural Wixaritari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are the Huichols? Origin Wix\u00e1rika.- The Huicholes are a very special ethnic group in our country.<\/strong>The members of the community have been in charge of keeping their culture and traditions alive through the passing of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its exact origin has not yet been corroborated.<\/strong>The Huichol are believed to be descended from different ethnic groups that were once settled in the Sierra Madre Occidental.<\/p>\n\n\n

Where is the Huichol community located?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Huichols inhabit the central east of Mexico.<\/strong>, are settled in the \"Sierra Wix\u00e1rika\", mainly in the mountainous region of Nayarit and in the highlands of Jalisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious objects used by the Huichols<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The muvieris<\/strong>, some small arrows made of bamboo that incorporate feathers at one end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ni\u00e9rika<\/strong> It is created based on circular fabrics of yarn with many colors with a hole in the center, sometimes it can have a mirror covering the hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tacuats<\/strong> Also known as backpacks, they are embroidered and sometimes also have beads attached to them. They are very functional objects where shamans treasure their sacred symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The uweni<\/strong> which is a type of dwarf chair that is only used for ritual use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally there is the Tepo<\/strong>, which is a type of drum made from the trunk of the oak tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural history, heritage and legacy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Wix\u00e1rika ethnic group is one of the ethnic groups that has managed to maintain its traditions and culture almost intact over time, being transmitted from generation to generation through the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the conquest, the Huichols had to flee to the Sierra to try not to be found by the Spanish troops, but some of them did not manage to flee in time and were taken by the Franciscan monks to later be converted to Christianity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is evidence of some documents that mention how the Huichols occupied the Jalisco region, the stories of Alonso Ponce dating from 1587<\/strong>, They tell about an ethnic group that united with an ethnic group called guachichiles to carry out incursions in the settlements and in the caravans coming from the Spaniards, it is believed that the ethnic group to which he was referring was that of the Huichols. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
