Wooden figure in the shape of a bee, hand painted by artisans from Oaxaca, Mexico. In the Zapotec culture, the alebrije is a wild, mystical and protective animal, linked to every individual since birth; it is called nahual. Alebrijes are carved in copal wood and painted by hand.
